PBS will broadcast our Flora High School scholastic bowl team on Scholastic Hi-Q. Three participants, Brody Sharp, Justin Mitchell, and Katie Muskopf led by Dr. Drake participated in this year’s Scholastic Hi-Q contest in Carbondale.
Dr. Drake, 9th-year Scholastic bowl coach, has competed in the Scholastic Hi-Q contest ever since his first year. “The first time I went was in 2013,” explained Dr. Drake, but Flora High School had played before that.
Every year Scholastic Hi-Q is held in Carbondale at WSIU. Flora High School has made it past the first round but has never made it past the second.
The contents are played much like the game show Jeopardy. “Each correct answer is worth 10 points. There are toss ups, bonus questions, and even a lightning round.” described Dr. Drake.
Granite City beat Flora with a 420 to 80 point lead. Even though the Flora Scholastic Bowl team lost, they put up a strong fight.
Answering as many points as they could, they buzzed in when they knew the question or if they had a strong idea of what the answer was.
“They haven’t given us a date yet, but Scholastic Hi-Q will be on air sometime during December on PBS,” said Dr. Drake.
