With the new grade scale being introduced into the school, staff have numerous things to say about it.
English 1 teacher Mrs.Crawford said, Although she hasn’t used it long enough to have any pros or cons regarding it, she still does have some concerns about it. “The students that aren’t motivated to complete work may use this as a reason to slack off more. “ On a positive note, she believes, “The grading scale will relieve some stress for students who are attempting to earn a certain/higher grade level. These students will view the grading scale as a positive change. The grading scale is easier to follow than the prior grading scale, but it will take teachers/students time to adjust to the changes. “
Altogether, her responses show that she believes it is easier to use and will be a positive
Change for students.
Math 1 teacher Mrs.Bernahl said, ” I hope that the students’ GPAs rise as a direct result, and they qualify for more scholarships as well as college admissions. For our nonacademic students, I hope for more graduates, allowing them more opportunities in their future.”
She hopes more students will have more opportunities for future academic success.
She answered,’’ The new grade scale aligns with other surrounding schools and colleges. She likes the idea of the grade scale being aligned with other schools because not only does it make things easier, but it is used in even area colleges. She stated, “As a teacher, my only benefit would be not as many students repeat the class.” Overall, her personal thoughts are that she hopes it gives many better opportunities to students.
FHS principal Mr. Pearce seemed to be very unsure of the idea because he didn’t know much about it, but he also had positive things to say.
”At first, I didn’t know if I would like it or not when it was first proposed, but we looked into it, and other schools had similar grade scales.”
His believes, ”we don’t want our kids to have lower standards but we also don’t want them to be at a disadvantage when they apply for college and compete for scholarships when our gpa is tougher to obtain with the other grade scale that we had so looking after that we thought it was the right decision” meanwhile for teachers he thinks it will really clear things up with the dual credit classes offered to the juniors and seniors. Those teachers also use the new grade scale instead of both of them. He thinks it’s a huge advantage for the students who are pushing themselves and taking the extra classes. He hopes they will benefit the most from it and deserve it.”
Overall, he wants students to know that it will be better for them because of the many opportunities it gives to students.
