FHS students collected coins for the cause for Elizabeth Weidner, a student who attended Teutopolis High School. Elizabeth was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma Cancer in January of 2016.
Following her death on September 29, her parents wanted to raise $18,000 before her 18th birthday for a scholarship.
During lunch, volleyball games, and outside of school, the Flora student council encouraged people to contribute. People donated throughout the first two weeks of October.
This fundraiser came about as a way to repay Teutopolis High School for their generosity with an FHS fundraiser a few years ago.
In 2017 FHS had what was called “Road ro Rufus” where Flora High School raised money for a service dog named Gracie, who was gifted to a Mr. Tackitt’s nephew who was in need of a service dog. “We are grateful for all the donations we have received and we hope to continue helping others in need,” Mr. Tackitt said.
The goal for this coin drive was $500, but FHS ended up raising a little over $600. “Teutopolis had donated roughly 500 dollars to our fundraiser,” Ms. Westjohn stated.
We have a school community where we are great at giving back to others.”We always want to pay it forward,” explained Ms. Westjohn.
