Multiple students at Flora High School prepared applications for a life-changing opportunity to enroll within the CEO Program, a place for ambitious students who want to learn the details of running a successful business. Those enrolled in the program spend their year working outside of the school, meeting with mentors from various businesses and gaining firsthand experience in the workplace. However, claiming your place in the program is not an easy task, and according to Ms. Massie, it requires not only hard work, but a dedicated and a positive attitude.
Selection for the program is a rigorous process, Ms. Massie mentioned. Students must meet specific requirements in order to be eligible, including remaining on track for graduation, maintaining a good personality, demonstrating a strong work ethic, and being willing to dress professionally for class. Self-transportation to off-campus locations is also required, as the students never meet at school.
The application process is a significant challenge. Students must submit applications that include two outside references by the chosen due date. However, the CEO advisory board does know the names of the applicants, as they were replaced with a series of numbers to ensure confidentiality and ensure a fair process. After the applications were reviewed, the board would meet to discuss the applicants and select the final students.
Usually, within two weeks of submission, the students are notified of their placements. The FHS class aimed to accept a maximum of 20 students, though there was no set minimum for admission.
For underclassmen, the key to improving their chances of being selected as seniors was to maintain a strong personality, demonstrate good work ethic, and stay involved in school activities.
The benefits of the program are undeniable, as students gain valuable real-world experiences, including visiting 45+ businesses throughout the year. Students learn everything from social skills and teamwork to building and maintaining a business.
