All-American, but not the Netflix show. This one is a UCA cheer camp brought to our cheerleaders by Emily from Varsity.
All cheerleaders who attend the required summer camp have an opportunity to try out for the All-American cheer team. The girls who make the team are awarded with a medal, patch, and invited to attend special events across the country.
This year’s All-American FHS cheerleaders are Jebee Salmorin, Kamry Austin, Jadyn Lewis, Alyssa Anderson, Allie Krutsinger, Ava Hout, and Mia Darrough
While the girls loved the opportunity provided by the camp, it wasn’t all fun and games.
“The worst part was waking up early in the morning,” sophomore cheerleader Jebee Salmorin said.
The camp started early in the morning and lasted 7 hours. While many girls enjoyed learning new techniques, others hated being in the hot gym.
The Flora cheerleaders learned new stunts, band chants, two dances, three floor cheers, and three sideline cheers.
“The best part for me was putting the new stunts we learned into the dance,” second year cheerleader Jadyn Lewis said.
According to senior cheerleader Alyssa Anderson, “throughout the camp, our cheerleaders encouraged each other to continue to work hard.”
Tryouts to make the All-American team included jumps, a dance taught by the UCA staff, and a sideline cheer. The girls gathered into groups of three and performed the dance they learned in three days.
