Students add shark dissecting to their experiences

“Not everyone can say they’ve dissected a shark,” Dirk “D-Hock” Hockman, the agriculture teacher at Flora High School said.

The FHS Ag science class dissected sharks as their last huge event of the year. “The kids have been doing homework and projects all year long,” Mr. Hockman said. “I found the shark dissection lab my first year teaching and thought it would be a fun lab to end the year with.

Ag Science studies nutrition, animal handling, well-being, and companionship.

In previous years shark dissection was before spring break, but due to complications with the weather, it was postponed until a week before finals.

When dissecting last year, the class found 3 baby sharks still in the womb of one shark; this year they found 5 babies all in one shark.

The Ag science class is best for people who want a fun, hands-on class to counterbalance their college preparation classes.

Mr. Hockman remarked, “Besides the smell, it is an enjoyable lab.”
