FHS baseball team mid-season update

By: Nicholas Freeman

With 16 games played this season, the Flora Wolves baseball team is off to a decent start. The weather hasn’t always cooperated, however, as five games have been rained out. As of April 18th, the Wolves have a record of 11-5.

The team is comprised of 18 players. They are coached by Brian Tackitt and Joshua Fox. Fox is acting as assistant and junior varsity coach.

The FHS Wolves’ 1st baseman and pitcher, Trevor Nicholson, said, “We’ve been [off to a] slow start, but we have the potential to do better. We’ve had too many rain outs.” Outfielder, Lane Stanford, agreed by saying, “We’re having our ups and downs right now.”

According to Lane Stanford, the team has been focusing on hitting during practice. Nicholson agreed that the team has really worked on hitting, but also stated, “[We’ve been practicing at] getting better at staying on top of the ball.”

Nicholson’s fondest memory this season is when the Wolves achieved a “ten run rule [on] opening day vs Carlyle.” Stanford stated that he’s glad to be “starting baseball again this year. I missed it a bunch!”

Stanford feels that “good pitching” has contributed to the team’s success, while Nicholson attributes it to “the middle of the line up getting on base more often.”

In addition to their regular season games,, the Wolves competed in the Du Quoin tournament on April 1.

Nicholson expresses hopes of winning conference, advancing to sectionals, and continuing beyond. Stanford said he would like to win regionals. Currently, the last scheduled game for the Wolves is regionals on May 23
