Art Camp 2018

By Victoria Bates

Sculpting, painting, and an Indonesian style of art called Batik were all introduced to 60 Clay County students, ages 8 to 13, this summer in the Flora High School commons.

Mrs. Jacquie Sloan, the art teacher, explained that before the new camp at Flora High School, vice principal, Mr. Bob McNeely, was in search of an artistic activity for his daughter, but was disappointed to find out that the closest one was nearly 2 hours away.

“Non-athletic students need to have an enjoyable activity to participate in as well,” Mrs.Sloan stated.

To the FHS art teacher, the biggest challenge was organizing activities and ordering custom T-Shirts for all of the high schoolers participating as staff.
“For my first year, 60 kids was overwhelming to organize, but it was worth it. I’ll definitely do it again next summer,” she claimed.

There was no direct source of income for the club to host this activity other than a $35 participation fee paid by the attendants which covered all needed supplies.
