Seniors honored with awards, scholarships

By Hannah Bute

Each year, Flora High School hosts a senior awards ceremony in the auditorium. During this ceremony, various scholarships are granted to graduating seniors. These scholarships range from $200 to $2000 or more, and they come in the forms of memorial scholarships, academic scholarships, and athletic scholarships.

This year, the Flora Academic Foundation, who awards most of the scholarships, calculated the total amount of money granted via scholarships to be approximately $450,100. This money included scholarships given to seniors by the colleges they are attending next year.

Among these scholarships and awards, Olney Central College gave out $22,000 and our own Gerald Klein gave out over $2000 in two-dollar bills to all staff members and students.

In addition to the various scholarships, the teachers of each of the departments within the high school handed out departmental awards. These awards include:

Agriculture: Megan Guthrie

Industrial Arts: Garrett Williams

Art: Rhana Headley

Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award: Meg Hout

John Phillip Sousa Band Award: Al Stewart

Drama: Jamie Burrow

Business: Colleen McMahon

Accounting: Marissa Wagley

Computer Technology: Andrew Souder

Co-op: Maverick Fisher

The class of 2014 won a large number of scholarships from the colleges they are attending in the fall. Hannah Bute’s scholarships total nearly $86,000 from the University of South Carolina. Colleen McMahon got $80,000 from the University of Illinois at Springfield, and Alyssa Stanford won approximately $66,000 from the same college. Rayden Moore won a scholarship of $64,000 from Evansville. From Butler, Olivia Booth received a scholarship totaling $68,000. Adriana Tienda received $20,000 from U of I. Gideon Raley and Al Stewart will both receive full tuition from OCC, and Jessica Payne received $2,000 from them. Meg Hout received a scholarship of $52,000 from Greenville. Many other students earned scholarships, and the class ended up with over $400,000 in awards toward college.
