By Meredith O’Brien Flora High School publication class attended the University of Illinois Journalism Conference last Friday September 12, 2014. The seminars began with a speaker, Marco Santana, who is a technology reporter for the Des Moines Register. He interviewed many different people in his life so far including Chicago Cubs player Wrigley Field. The conference contained three lectures with different topics throughout the day. The students could choose what workshops they would like to attend depending on their interest. They offered workshops including advising, multimedia/photography, design, writing, and marketing. Students also got to meet other students from all over Illinois and learn about how their publication class worked. Darian Cazadd noted one difference she saw, “students in other schools were divided into a specific group within the class. Where ours it’s who wants to do this story on football or Appleknocker.”
