National Honor Society is a nationwide organization devoted to recognizing students who succeed in academics, leadership, and service to the community.  It a very prestigious honor that very few students are able to attain.  This year, NHS is being supervised by FHS’s Debbie Gummert.  Under Mrs. Gummert’s direction, this society has been very active.

This year, NHS members have been helping improve our school by tutoring those in need of assistance.  In this way, students are able to achieve higher grades with the patience and guidance of members of the society.

Also, members volunteered their time during the annual Appleknocker festival last fall.  They helped children show their creative side by using their thumb prints to make different creations.  The members agreed on naming this booth “Fingerdoodles” and it was a success.  Kids did not have to pay to do this activity as NHS wanted to do it for free.

To conclude the year, the members designed a senior T-shirt which will be worn by the seniors during their graduation practice.  The profit from these shirts allowed senior NHS members to not pay to attend the spring banquet.  This is a quite an accomplishment because tickets are $10 a person.

This banquet will be held on May 6 at the high school.  The officers from this year, president Meg Hout, vice president Marissa Wagley, secretary Adriana Tienda, and treasurer Olivia Booth, will be passing down their positions to the new officers.  Members voted and Kenzie Jennings will be president, Sam Briscoe vice president, Sarah Alvord secretary, and Daniel Pieplow will be treasurer.  There will also be a meal catered by Mike’s Market that evening.

With several students excelling, many new candidates were added to NHS.  On March 27, 19 students who excelled in all of the above criteria were pinned by incumbents.  These students included: Danny Li, Malachi Raley, Gideon Raley, Jessica Payne, Makayla Murphy, Taylor Allen, Brooke Winka, Kyndra Wyman, Deandra Burgess, Allison Carder, Sarah Conrad, Elyssa Evans, Shelby Koehler, Ian Leib, Jaelyn Leib, Janna Leib, Jerrica Leib, Parker Moses, and Michael Suntrup. They were all pinned in the learning center and will be inducted at the National Honor Society banquet on May 6.
