Flora High School recently welcomed 13 new NHS members of 2015. These members are Joanna Alvord, Breann Beckham,Bailey Pearce, Jeffrey Gaither, Brianna Beard, Chris Scott, Trevor White, Jordan Winka, Ashton Clark, Garrett Williams, Kolbi Kittle, Angelia Warren, and Cindy Williams. The incumbent members are Taylor Allen, Sarah Alvord, Brooke Bayles, Samantha Briscoe, Rebecca Brown, Deandra Burgess, Allison Carder, DArian Cazadd, Sarah Conrad, Kylie cox, Luke Durre, Isaac Goldstein, Kendra Hilderbrand, Brooke Hustedde, Kenzie Jennings, Shelby Koehler, Bria Krutsinger, Ian Leib, Jaelyn Leib, Janna Leib, Jerrica Leib, Trevin Milner, Parker Moses, Meredith O’Brien, Bryce Pearce, Daniel Pieplow, Jessica Staley, Brooke Winka, Kyndra Wyman.

The National Honor Society will be having a banquet April 29 at 7 p.m. in the high school commons. Debbie Gummert says that each incumbent member receives a certificate and each new member receives an NHS pin and certificate of membership at this banquet; the seniors get white tassels to be worn at graduation.

The students will pick a service project to do each year and will participate in the local Appleknocker festival. NHS will gather monthly during school year to plan activities, develop the chapter fellowship and plan for selection and pinning of new members. Gummert tells that students are also obligated to pay yearly dues and plan an annual fundraiser to off-set national chapter membership dues.

The members are each chosen by Scholarship (students must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA), Character (students must have a clean discipline record), Service (students are active in their school and community), Leadership (students play an active role in their school clubs, activities and/or athletics). The amount of new members vary year to year, usually 10 to 20 students.

National Honor Society to Gummert is prestigious national organization that promotes appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Thousands of schools are chartered and their chapters are following the national constitution.

According to NASSP National Honor Society was established in 1921 under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson. The organization quickly developed into one of the country’s leading educational groups. National Honor Society is nation’s premier organization created to recognize outstanding high school students. There are four main purposes guiding chapters of NHS. the following are 1. Create enthusiasm for scholarship, 2. Stimulate desire to render service, 3. Promote leadership, 4. Develop character membership selection in each local chapter.
