When Collin Moseley joined FFA Section 23 his sophomore year, he did not expect his involvement to lead to his current office as FFA Chapter Section 23 Vice President.

FFA used to only stand for the “Future Farmers of America”, but it means so much more than that now. It includes government procedure, of which Moseley was chairman last year, interview competitions, and public speaking competitions. While competing in these events, Moseley placed at district in both, even winning first at section last year in the interview competition.

Because his future career choice is legislative and political, holding an office such as this is a great way to make him well-rounded and expose him to another side of politics.

Moseley was influenced to join FFA by former Flora High School student Garrett Williams, who was the Chapter President two years ago. Garrett was his role model and someone he looked up to while occupying the office of Greenhand President. Through this, Moseley saw how much fun the students were having and everything the officers did to help better the organization, which drew him to this program.

At the yearly banquet held in Louisville this May, Moseley had the chance to run for a Section 23 office, which included giving a campaign speech. He received the title Vice President, the highest office he could run for, given that he only has his Chapter degree.

With his position, he has co-responsibility over 15 schools in the area. He assists the president in any way he can, and if needed, can take over responsibilities, such as holding meetings, in the president’s absence.

Collin expresses his feelings for FFA stating, “FFA is a great opportunity and experience.” Moseley plans to use these roles as stepping stones for a future career, and they have already opened many doors for him. His Vice-Presidency is something he is definitely using to get ahead in life; he laughed saying, “it’s on the resume already”.

One perk of his new position is some schools offer scholarships for students holding this position. For example, The University of Illinois offers a $2,500 scholarship that renews every year once you are elected as Section Vice President.

At first, Moseley was out of his comfort zone, but that didn’t stop him from joining a vital organization that he quickly adjusted and settled into. Through the other students involved in FFA, Moseley has gained knowledge in agriculture and livestock; he has even had the opportunity to judge livestock joking, “it also helps when your girlfriend is a state showman for sheep”.

Moseley already has a full plate, including the title Illinois’ Youth Leadership Council Representative, Flora High School’s Student Body President, and a zone messenger for his church in Clay City.

This upcoming year there will be many events where he is able to be an advocate and competitions to look forward to. Along with these responsibilities, Moseley is excited to continue his involvement in FFA and predicts another great year.
